Developing Your Management Potential

Developing Your Management Potential

For young, aspiring executives in the workforce today, there is typically no goal higher for them that that of moving up the proverbial corporate ladder. One of the best ways a young or junior manager can achieve this dream is to properly learn how to develop proper management potential. Developing management potential for anyone in todays work force is not as easy as turning on a light switch. If one is to move up, or rather, take someone job that is higher than their own, one must make major changes in their work habits and managerial techniques.

Two of easiest ways to fully develop your management potential is by networking and mentoring. By networking we are not referring to computer networks, but rather "hob-knobbing". Socialize with the people who are in positions that you wish to be in. Talk to them, learn about them. Express to them your desire to move up. Who you know has much to do with how far you will move up. By mentoring a younger person to do your job, you show the "powers that be" that you have the ability to train and manage properly. More importantly, you show that you can have someone take your place for when you get the promotion that you are so confident that you will get.

In order to achieve the management potential that you will need to move up, you must also ask yourself "Where do I need to imporve?". In the past year at your job, what have you done extraordinarily well? In doing so, what talents or qualities have shown through to your coworkers? To get the fullest benefit from your strengths, are you always learning? Always willing to be taught something new? Once you have identified your strengths, improve them, learn more. Do what you can to eliminate any bad habits or attitude issues you may have. Use good manners (brown nose if you must) and find out what your weakness are and avoid them at all costs.
